What is a denture made out of?
Modern dentures are typically made out of plastic, often with a metal base, though this can be made out of plastic as well. The plastic of choice for dentures is polymethyl methacrylate acrylic.
How long do a set of dentures last?
Dentures will, eventually, need to be replaced, but with the proper care, they can last several years. In general, dentists recommend getting new dentures every five to ten years. Over this time, dentures get worn out due to regular use, and your gums may change shape or shrink over the years.
Advantages of Dentures
Dentures are less costly than dental implants and therefore are the most affordable option for some patients. Many people choose to start with dentures. Since they are less expensive a patient may try them out and see how they feel. If you have just had teeth removed recently, starting with dentures will allow your body time to heal before considering implants.
Depending on the location of the missing teeth, dentures may be a perfect solution. (Patients often find upper dentures look good and are easy to wear.) If additional teeth are lost in the future, it is easy to modify a denture to accommodate the loss.
Disadvantages of Dentures
- They must be removed and thoroughly cleaned regularly.
- Dentures are not usually worn overnight.
- Certain foods cannot be eaten with dentures.
- There is an increased risk of gum disease if food is trapped by the dentures.
- They can break if dropped, requiring replacement.
